The Naming Committee approves names for municipal facilities, new neighbourhoods, parks and roads. Matthew Dance, a local geographer and open data advocate, created this dataset in conjunction with the City of Edmonton.
Indigenous people have lived in the Edmonton area for more than 10,000 years. Edmonton currently has an urban Indigenous population of over 50,000, the second-largest in Canada, and it is growing quickly. Reflecting this rich past and large population are over 100 place names in Edmonton with Indigenous roots. Many of the names are familiar, but not automatically associated with their Cree or MĂ©tis origins. This data set allows users to explore Edmonton by learning the Indigenous source of many of the place names found in our city, including streets, parks, neighbourhoods, walkways and more.
