Development permits approve the use of a site, as well as the size and location of any buildings or structures. It is written approval from the City that development plans meet the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw regulations. An approved development permit is required before application for a building permit to construct the building or structure, or to apply for a business licence.

Some permits are combination permits. They combine both a development permit and a building permit in one application. This data set only represents the outcome of the development permit application. Building permit data is available through the General Building Permits dataset.

The rows with a year value of '2017' for example do not represent a comprehensive list of all pets that were licensed in 2017, but rather the subset of those pets that are still licensed as of the last update date of this dataset.

Due to the volume of data, this dataset contains 311 requests created within the current calendar year and the previous two calendar years. In January of a given year it will contain 2 years and 1 month of requests; in December of that year it will contain 3 years of requests. For historical data please search for "311 Requests (YEAR)" where "YEAR" is a year value, e.g. 2018. These will exist for years that no longer exist in this dataset, i.e. "current year minus three" will be the greatest year value that has its own single-year dataset.
