Insight Community Survey Results

Cannabis Consumption In Public Spaces was one of several topics covered in the February 2018 Mixed Topic Insight Community Survey. The survey was open from February 13 - 20, 2018.
At the time the survey was launched, survey invitations were sent to 7,131 Insight Community members.
A total of 2,071 respondents completed the survey:
  • 2,024 members (or 28% of the invited Insight Community members).
  • 40 other individuals who accessed the survey via a link.  No demographic information was gathered for these 40 individuals.

Question 1:

A description/explanation of Cannabis was provided to respondents along with both Federal and Provincial efforts regarding the legalization.
Respondents were then asked to select one response only to the following:

Do you think the Provincial restrictions on public consumption are appropriate, too strict, or not strict enough?

Question 1a:

If the answer to Q1 was "Not strict enough", then respondents were asked to select one response only to the following:
At a minimum, how far away from doors, windows, or air intakes should people be when smoking cannabis?

Question 2:

An explanation of what the City is considering was provided. Respondents were then asked to select one response only to the following:
Similar to smoking areas and beer gardens, do you think it would be appropriate to have designated cannabis consumption areas at festivals?

Question 3:

Respondents were asked to select one option for each item in response to this statement:
Do you think cannabis consumption should be allowed…
Item: on or near sports fields?
Item: on sidewalks and public paths?
Item: on city parkland such as picnic areas (excluding playgrounds and sports
Item: in high pedestrian areas like Jasper Avenue or Whyte Avenue?
