Shared Use Paths

Insight Community Survey Results

Shared Use Paths was one of several topics covered in the June 2018 Mixed Topic Insight Community Survey. The survey was open from June 12 - 19, 2018.
At the time the survey was launched, survey invitations were sent to 8,431 Insight Community members.
A total of 2,346 respondents completed the survey:
  • 2,323 members (or 28% of the invited Insight Community members).
  • 23 other individuals who accessed the survey via a link.  No demographic information was gathered for these 23 individuals.

Question 1:

Respondents were asked to select one response only to the following question:
"How often do you travel on shared use paths in a typical summer week?"

Question 2:

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to select all that apply to the following question:
"How do you use shared use paths?"
  • Walking
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Skateboarding
  • Scooter
  • Rollerblade
  • Walking / other activities with my dog or other pet
  • Other (please specify)                                                                

Question 3:

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to:
"Rate your level of concern about the following behaviours when travelling on shared use paths"
  • Cyclists going fast
  • Other users spreading out on the path
  • Walkers not staying to the right                                      
  • People passing on the right rather than the left
  • Cyclists not ringing their bell to pass                   
  • People not preventing their dog from lunging at me

Question 5:

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to:
"Rate your level of importance about the following behaviours being encouraged on shared use paths"
  • Keep Right
  • Pass on the left
  • Ring your bell
  • Slow down

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to select all that apply to the following question:
"Which areas on shared use paths do you find to be the most problematic from an etiquette and/or safety perspective?"
  • MacKinnon Ravine

Question 7:

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to:
"Rate how often have you seen or experienced the following behaviours on shared use paths"
  • Cyclists going fast
  • People spreading across the path
  • Walkers not staying to the right                                         
  • People passing on the right rather than the left
  • Cyclists not ringing their bell

Question 8:

If the answer to Question 1 was not "I do not use shared use paths", then respondents were asked to:
"Rate the frequency of doing the following"
  • Ride your bicycle fast when passing others             
  • Fail to ring your bell when passing others on your bicycle
  • Spread across the path while traveling in a group
  • Travel in the middle or on the left side of a shared use path
  • Pass others on the right rather than the left
